3 Day Assessment Skip Navigation Links

OETIO works with Labour Market Research (LMR) service providers to help determine whether a career as a heavy equipment operator would be a good option for an injured worker preparing to re-enter the workforce.

The physical demands that are listed in National Occupational Classification (NOC) for heavy equipment operator (NOC 7421) are based on a narrow definition of operator duties. They drastically understate the other physical tasks performed.

Specific injuries are more likely to be aggravated by entering into or returning to this type of work. OETIO offers three-day assessments to help determine your client’s suitability before they commit to training.

Here is how the 3-day Assessment works:

  • The client will work with an OETIO instructor for the 3 days operating a piece of heavy equipment.
  • The instructor will carry out an information and safety orientation, tailgate, and pre-operational inspection.
  • The instructor will demonstrate the task to be performed and will direct the client throughout the exercises.
  • The assigned tasks will reflect the actual work, movement and repetitiveness as if on a job site.
  • The assessment will focus on the client’s physical ability to perform the task rather than the quality of the work performed.
  • The operation of the equipment involves continual use of the hands and feet, as well as the rotation of the upper torso. This movement will help the client determine how these basic operating techniques are affecting them.
  • This process is repeated over the 3 days with the introduction of new exercises each day that will includes different movements and activities. Once again, the client will be asked how this activity is affecting them. The client’s feedback will be recorded by the instructor.
  • If discomfort becomes excessive at any time, the activity will be stopped immediately and the areas of discomfort, severity and duration will be recorded by the instructor.
  • A detailed written report will be completed and submitted to the sponsoring agency within 3 working days of completing the 3-day assessment.

The client and the agency will now be in a better position to make a career decision based on concrete information.
