High School Graduates

Would you rather open a toolbox than a briefcase? Have you always been intrigued by heavy equipment and the impressive (and sometimes delicate) work it can do? Are you excited by the prospect of working independently, outdoors, and actually creating something with your hands? Not afraid of hard work, long hours, and adapting to meet a different set of challenges every day?

Crane or heavy equipment operator might be right for you. Entering the trades is an exciting career choice, and can be a great alternative to College or University. There are opportunities with good earning potential, good benefits, and many different paths to career advancement. Through apprenticeship, you even have the ability to “earn while you learn”.

Career classes can help you determine what opportunities the industry offers, how much you can earn, and how to research and find the right job for you. Visit construction companies to find co-op and summer positions to help you gain experience, see how a construction site operates, and see if you like it.

To enter the construction industry, you have two options. You can either find an employer willing to train you from the ground up, or you can get a head start with effective training.

You typically must have a Grade 12 diploma (or equivalent), and you should concentrate on math and science. Recommended courses include Apprenticeship Math, English, and science.
