English is the primary working language on most jobsites in Ontario, so you must be able to read, write, and speak the language well. Crane operator is a compulsory trade in Ontario: you must have a licence to operate in the province. In order to receive a Certificate of Qualification, you must either complete an apprenticeship (2 to 5 years) or supply proof of equivalent work experience and pass a written examination. Heavy Equipment operator is a voluntary trade, so no license is required. However, many employers will require that you show proof of training.
