Hoisting Engineer Apprenticeship

Hoisting Engineer Apprenticeship is for either mobile crane (339A or 339C) or tower crane (339B) operators. Operator certification for both mobile and tower cranes is mandatory. Upon completion of the apprenticeship you must pass a written exam in order to attain a Certificate of Qualification. A license is required to operate a crane.

  • Mobile Crane Operator is a 6,000 hour apprenticeship that includes two six week (240 hour) terms of in-school training.
  • Tower Crane Operator is a 4,000 hour apprenticeship that includes six weeks (240 hours) of in-school training.
  • The Ontario Government requires a minimum grade 10 education or equivalent.
  • Most employers, including IUOE, Local 793, require a minimum of grade 12 education or equivalent.

Those interested in a career in operating cranes may apply to the IUOE, Local 793 Training Trust’s apprenticeship program. Eligible candidates will be invited to participate in a selection process. Successful applicants shall be indentured (registered) as an apprentice with the Ontario government.
