Heavy Equipment Operator Apprenticeship

Operator certification for the heavy equipment is voluntary. However, employers and the Union may ask for a Certificate of Apprenticeship. Heavy Equipment Operator Apprenticeship is either tractor-loader-backhoe (636A) or excavator (636B), or bulldozer (636C).

  • Each is a 2,000 to 2,500 hour apprenticeship that includes 6 weeks (240 hours) of in-school training.
  • The Ontario Government requires a minimum grade 12 education or equivalent.

Those interested in a career in operating heavy equipment may apply to the IUOE, Local 793 Training Trust’s apprenticeship program. Eligible candidates will be invited to participate in a selection process. Successful applicants shall be indentured (registered) as an apprentice with the Ontario government.
