On-job Coaching Skills

An awareness of different coaching roles and techniques will allow on-the-job instructors to adapt to different situations and positively impact the student’s overall success. This workshop will help the coach build his/her skills in support of on-the-job learning. To that end, participants familiarize themselves with the training strategy used for heavy machinery operators and hoisting Engineers, the principles of adult learning, the characteristics of effective coaching, and the required communication skills, coaching techniques and evaluation principles.

Duration:

32 hours over four days

Prerequisite: None
Format:

Classroom, lectures, working groups, role plays, videos and presentations by participants

Evaluation: Skill lesson presentation.

OETIO Certificate

To provide on-the-job coaching, it is expected that the participant will know how to perform the following tasks:

  • Conduct pre-session assessment of learning needs.
  • Plan and prepare the learning activity.
  • Brief the student on the learning activity and performance requirements.
  • Demonstrate the skills to be learned.
  • Observe and evaluate student performance.
  • Provide feedback on performance and additional assistance as required.
  • Provide on-going, informal assistance as needed.
  • Track and record student progress.
